Department of Bio Chemistry

Department of Biochemistry was started in 1957 with Dr. V. BrahamaiahSastry as first Professor. Afterwards it was successfully headed by Dr. C. Sita Devi, Dr. B. Sadasivudu, Dr. Rayapa Reddy, Dr. GhouseMohiddin Ali, Dr. P. Sandhya, Dr. V. Jaya Rami Reddy, Dr. P. Chandra Sekhar, Dr. L. Vasantha, Dr. M. Siva Reddy, Dr. D.V.H.S. Sarma, Dr. B.Vijayasaradhini and at present by Dr.A.Padma Vijayasree.

In the beginning Biochemistry was part of Physiology and later from 1972 onwards it became an independent subject. Post-graduation course M.D. Biochemistry was started from academic year 1972 with 2 seats. Later 3rd seat was granted from the year 2012. Till date 40 postgraduates successfully completed M.D Biochemistry from the Department.

The department of Biochemistry has done immense research work in different fields of Biochemistry. It has got ICMR research projects under the guidance of Dr. Sadasivudu. Dr. Radhakrishna Murthy was awarded Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. Sadasivudu. Dr. Sadasivudu is infact the father of Medical Biochemistry in South India. He is a walking Encyclopedia in Biochemistry. He has done lot of research work under ICMR and his major field of interest was in NeuroBiochemistry. Dr. Sadasivudu was awarded the prestigious B.C. Roy award as eminent teacher in Medical faculty.

Dr. C. Sita Devi carried research work on Lipoprotein’s. Dr. Vasantha carried major work under ICMR project on hypertension and purine metabolism.

P. Sravankumar has done the ICMR Project work in “INCIDENCE OF MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION IN PEOPLE WITH ABDOMINAL OBESITY, HYPERTENSION, and SMOKING AND THEIR ASSOCIATED LIPID PROFILE ABNORMALITIES” in the year 2004 under the guidance of Dr.D.V.H.S.Sharma.

Dr.K.Amarnath Reddy (2014-17) has got University First Place in MD-BIOCHEMISTRY Examination conducted by Dr.NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada.

24 HOURS LABORATORY SERVICES: The department is carrying out chemical investigations for the patients of Government General Hospital and also helping the clinical post graduate students in their thesis work in 24 hours laboratory. This lab is equipped with FULLY AUTOMATED ANALYZER (AU480) and HORMONAL ANALYZER (CLIA).
