Department of Gastroenterology

The department of gastroenterology was started in 1985 and Dr. Bajrang Pratap Mathur was the first professor of the department. Since then the department has been rendering yeoman service to the people of Rayalaseema and people from adjoining districts of telangana and Karnataka.

To start with the department didnot have its own building and the patients were admitted in different medical wards and were being treated. Later, a new Gastroenterology department was established with the bed strength of 20. Dr. Venkata Naidu, alumini of KMC, in 1989 donated flexible gastroscope and colonoscope. Later in 1995, the department was equipped with video gastroscope, video colonoscope and video neonatal scope with active persuation of late Dr. Kanna Venkateshwarulu, who was Professor of gastroenterology.

The department has one professor and two assistant professor posts. Dr. Kanna Venkateshwarulu was second professor in the department and was later joined by two assistant professors- Dr. B. Shankar Sharma and Dr. V. Venkata Ranga Reddy in 1999.

The department has grown phenomenally and has been performing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, besides creating lot of awareness regarding Hepatitis B, C virus prevention and cancer prevention among other things.

The department is conducting many CMEs, workshops and many papers have been published in various indexed journals. Various papers and posters have also been presented in national and state conferences.

In 2015 august, Dr. B. Shankar Sharma became third professor in the Department and he was joined by Dr. Mohan Reddy as assistant Professor. Due to untiring and fervent efforts of Dr. B. Shankar Sharma, and with the cooperation of the principal, Dr. G. S. Ram Prasad, department could get two post graduates seats in the year 2016.

Now, The department has five post graduates- first batch postgraduates are 1. Dr. Durga Reddy 2. Dr. P Kranthi Kumar, second year postgraduate – Dr Sudhanva V. Kinhal, first year postgraduates 1. Dr. Arun Arora P. 2. Dr. Nirdesh Chauhan.

After the addition of postgraduates, the work in the department has increased enormously and regular diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP’s are being performed. Very shortly the department is going to get endosonography.

Under the stewardship of Dr. B. Shankar Sharma, a new departmental building is coming up according to MCI norms with ICU facilities.
